Historic Center of Lima:
Walking Tour

About the tour

The city of Lima is the capital of Peru and stands out mainly for being located next to the Pacific Ocean, its incredible gastronomy, and its rich cultural heritage, concentrated especially in the Historic Center. Colonial buildings with European influence, houses with carved wooden balconies, and beautiful plazas make this area a place full of history and — today — also vibrant with popular culture.

Itinerary

Plaza San Martín

The driver, along with the guide from Pacha Experiences, will pick you up from your hotel/accommodation at 8:30 a.m. to head together toward Lima’s Historic Center, located in the district of Cercado de Lima. Our first stop will be Plaza San Martín.
This plaza is just a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas and features buildings with European architecture and Art Nouveau style. The Colón Theater, Hotel Bolívar, and the National Club are some of its most emblematic constructions, each with its own unique story.

Torre Tagle Palace

We will continue our route on foot along Jirón Ucayali. On this pedestrian street is the Torre Tagle Palace (1735), which today serves as the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru. Its Andalusian Baroque style, with well-preserved wooden porticos and balconies, reminds us of the significant influence the Spanish Crown had on Peru during those times.

Central Market

The tour will continue along Jirón Ucayali until we cross Abancay Avenue to reach the Central Market. We will take a walk through this space, learning about native foods that come from all over Peru: coast, highlands, and jungle. It is also a very picturesque spot, as it brings together people who migrated from different provinces and now have their jobs there. A place full of folklore, vibrant colors, and rich flavors.

Hotel Maury / Pisco Sour

We will cross Jirón Ucayalli again to reach Hotel Maury. According to experts, it was in the bar of this hotel where the first Pisco Sour was made, in the early 1920s. We will learn more about its history and, of course, how to prepare a good Pisco Sour!

Plaza de Armas

We will walk back toward the Plaza de Armas of Lima. Also known as the Plaza Mayor, it is built with French Neo-Baroque influence. Its main buildings include the Lima Cathedral, the Government Palace, and the Municipal Palace. It was in this plaza where General Don José de San Martín proclaimed Peru’s independence in 1821. In 1991, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Basilica and Convent of Santo Domingo

Located on Jirón Camaná is a beautiful religious building, notable mainly for its large basilica with a bell tower. We will visit the interior of this building, where you can also learn more about Saint Rose of Lima and Saint Martin de Porres. At the end of the tour, we will climb to the top of the tower to enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Lima.
The tour will conclude with a visit to the House of Literature, which was formerly the Desamparados Train Station, before reaching the final stop of the tour: the Park of the Wall (Parque de la Muralla).
